Shaun Cassidy Explains His Four Decade Departure From Music and the Meaning Behind His Emotional Return
After spending more than four decades away from the concert stage, Shaun Cassidy is embracing music once again with a renewed sense of purpose. Speaking during an interview for Jazzin’ with Jessi, the former 1970s pop sensation reflected on why he chose to leave his successful music career in 1980, what inspired his return, and how his creative journey has evolved over the years.
Cassidy, who rose to international fame as both a chart topping singer and star of the television series The Hardy Boys, explained that stepping away from performing was never about abandoning music itself. Instead, he found a new creative path as a television writer and producer, a career that ultimately offered him a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Looking back, Cassidy admitted that the intense attention he received as a teenage pop idol was not the life he truly wanted. While he loved performing and acting, he became fascinated by storytelling behind the scenes. Writing, he said, felt almost magical because it allowed him to create worlds while remaining close to home instead of constantly living on the road.
His final concert before his long hiatus took place in 1980 at the Astrodome in Houston before approximately 55,000 people. At the time, he never imagined it would be more than forty years before he performed another live show.
Cassidy revealed that the isolation experienced during the pandemic played an important role in bringing him back to the stage. Rather than attempting to recreate the image of his younger self, he wanted to reconnect with people in a way that reflected who he is today. That idea eventually became the foundation of his Road to Us Tour, a performance that combines personal storytelling with the songs that made him famous.
Revisiting music after such a long absence has also changed his relationship with his catalog. Cassidy said every song now feels fresh to him because he never spent decades performing the same hits night after night. As a result, he believes he can sing them today with a depth of emotion and commitment that would have been impossible had he never stepped away.
One particularly meaningful moment in the show features music from the Broadway production Blood Brothers, where Cassidy once performed alongside his late brother, David Cassidy. Today, that duet continues through the voice of his nephew, creating one of the show’s most emotional highlights.
Beyond nostalgia, Cassidy emphasized that his return is driven by a broader purpose. He hopes live performances can bring people together during a time when society often feels divided and increasingly disconnected. For him, gathering people in one room to share music and stories is about building genuine human connection rather than revisiting past fame.
His commitment to giving back extends beyond the stage. Cassidy has supported No Kid Hungry for several years and launched the My First Crush wine label during the pandemic. The project helped support the nonprofit’s efforts to fight childhood hunger while also assisting local grape growers in California’s Santa Barbara wine region, demonstrating that his return to public life is rooted not only in music but also in community service and meaningful causes.
