Four Rode By Preserves a Dark Chapter of Canadian History Through the Timeless Harmony of Ian and Sylvia
Among the many remarkable recordings created by Ian and Sylvia during their years with Vanguard Records, Four Rode By stands as one of the duo’s most compelling historical ballads. Featured as the fourth track on their 1964 album Northern Journey, the song reflects the pair’s remarkable ability to transform real historical events into powerful folk storytelling while preserving the emotional depth that defines their music.
Written by Ian Tyson, Four Rode By draws inspiration from a notorious episode in Canadian history. The song tells the story of the Wild McLeans, a group consisting of brothers Allan, Charles, and Archie McLean, along with their French Métis companion Alex Hare. In December 1879, the four men terrorized fur traders and trappers across British Columbia, leaving behind a trail of violence and several cold blooded murders. After an intense pursuit by a posse, they were captured and later executed on January 31, 1881. Charles and Allan were both in their twenties, Alex Hare was only seventeen, and Archie McLean had just turned fifteen when he faced the gallows.
Rather than presenting the events as a simple historical account, Ian Tyson shaped the story into a haunting folk ballad that reflects on the tragedy and consequences surrounding these lives. The song was inspired in part by The Outlaws, a pamphlet published by F. W. Lindsay in 1963 that retold the exploits of several infamous Canadian criminals with a distinct sense of national folklore. Tyson transformed that source into a work that feels both intimate and reflective, allowing history to resonate through music instead of mere narration.
The performance is further elevated by the unmistakable partnership between Ian Tyson and Sylvia Tyson. Their voices blend with quiet confidence, while the combined guitar work of Ian Tyson and John Herald creates a rich acoustic foundation that perfectly complements the song’s solemn atmosphere. The arrangement remains understated, allowing the lyrics and melody to carry the emotional weight of the story.
Four Rode By also reflects the broader artistic vision of Ian and Sylvia during their Vanguard years. Between 1962 and 1968, the duo recorded seven studio albums for the label, producing eighty seven songs that helped establish them as leading voices in the North American folk revival. Northern Journey remains one of the defining works from that period, and Four Rode By continues to demonstrate how traditional folk music can preserve history with honesty, dignity, and enduring emotional power.
